Maxwells equations have a large amount of freedom, which is shown in the two constitutive relations for the electric and magnetic fields. The Kerr effect appears in both liquids and solids, and also has a magnetic analogue, which is mentioned in the article; it is only one of many nonlinear constitutive relations. The purpose of this article is to study a certain Kerr-like model nonlinearity, with variable exponent between 2 and 6, which leads to an almost linear, static Maxwell equation. The main result of the article is stated in real analysis language for this equation. The proof uses Hölder's inequality and Fatou's lemma. The results could possibly also be used in the magnetic case.
