Let \(\{{T_t}\}\) be the semigroup associated with the symmetric Markov process on a measure space \((M,m)\). The author introduces the notion of \textit{dual ultracontractivity}: \(\{{T_t}\}\) is dual ultracontractive if \(T_t\) maps \(L^\infty(m)\) into \(L^1(m)\) for all \(t > 0\). Necessary and sufficient conditions for dual ultracontractivity are obtained. A typical result is the following. For a given \(\mu > 0\), the following are equivalent: \[ \|T_t f\|_1\leq c_1 t^{-\mu/2}\|f\|_\infty \quad\text{for all }t>0,\;f\in L^\infty; \] \[ \|f\|_2^{2+\frac{4}{\mu}}\leq c_2 {\mathcal E}(f,f)\|f\|_\infty^{\frac{4}{\mu}} \quad\text{for all }f\in \text{Dom}({\mathcal E})\cap L^\infty, \] where \(\mathcal E\) is the associated Dirichlet form. As an application, the author considers minimal one-dimensional diffusion processes on \((0, l)\), \((0,\infty)\), \((-\infty,\infty)\). The conditions for dual ultracontractivity are given in terms of the diffusion speed measures.
