The authors investigate the following interpolation problem: find sufficient and necessary conditions on the parameters \((\theta,q)\) such that the real interpolation space \((X_0,X_1)_{\theta,q}\) is a closed subspace of the space \((Y_0,Y_1)_{\theta,q}\), where \(X_j\) is a closed complemented subspace of the Banach space \(Y_j\), for \(j=0,1\). This problem was solved by \textit{S. Ivanov} and \textit{N. Kalton} [St. Petersbg. Math. J. 13, No. 2, 221--239 (2002) and Algebra Anal. 13, No. 2, 93--115 (2002; Zbl 1014.46046)] under some conditions, like that the codimension of \(X_0\) in \(Y_0\) must be equal to one. The authors generalize this result to the case when \(X_0\) has finite codimension in \(Y_0\) and, also, they establish necessary and sufficient conditions in order that the equality \( (X_0,X_1)_{\theta,q} = (Y_0,Y_1)_{\theta,q}\) occurs under the single condition that \(X_i\) a closed complemented subspace of \(Y_i\), \(i=0,1\). To prove this, a result on invertibility of operators due to \textit{I. Asekritova} and \textit{N. Kruglyak} [J. Funct. Anal. 264, No. 1, 207-245 (2013; Zbl 1279.46012)] is used. Furthermore, the authors connect the characterization of the equality \( (X_0,X_1)_{\theta,q} = (Y_0,Y_1)_{\theta,q}\) and the generalization of Ivanov-Kalton's theorem.
