The authors study universal localizations from a homological perspective. Following the preliminaries, the first main result shows that for a ring epimorphism \(f:A\rightarrow B\) with suitable conditions on \(B,\) \(f\) is homological if and only if it is a universal localization. In such a setting subject to a few more requirements, it is then showed that if \(f\) is a homological ring epimorphism, then the derived restriction functor \(f_{\ast } \) induces a recollement of derived module categories. The authors then look at some consequences and special cases of these results which, in conclusion, are illustrated by a number of examples.
