Let \(T\) be a bounded linear operator on a complex Hilbert space, and \(T=U|T|\) be the polar decomposition of \(T\). The authors define the mean transform \[ \hat{T}=\frac{U|T|+|T|U}{2}. \] Then the authors give some properties of the mean transform of an operator. Especially, the authors consider (i) the spectrum \(\sigma(\hat{T})\) of \(\hat{T}\), (ii) continuity of the map \(T \mapsto \hat{T}\), (iii) \(k\)-hyponormality of \(\hat{W}_{\alpha}\) of a weighted shift operator \(W_{\alpha}\) with the weight sequence \(\alpha=(\alpha_{0},\alpha_{1},\dots{})\) and (iv) subnormality of \(\hat{W}_{\alpha}\) when \(W_{\alpha}\) is subnormal. To discuss these topics, the authors compare the properties of the Aluthge transform.
