      The authors are interested in the following abstract Cauchy problem with special structural damping \[ u_{tt} + \rho A u_t + A^2 u=0, t \in (0,\infty), u(0)=x_0, u_t(0)=y_0 \] in a Banach space \(X\). Here \(A:D(A) \subset X \to X\) is a sectorial operator, \(x_0 \in D(A), y \in X\). The authors reduce after factorization this abstract Cauchy problem to the following abstract system: \[ \begin{aligned} & v_t + \sigma_1 Av=0, v(0)=v_0:=y_0+\sigma_2 A x_0,\\ & u_t + \sigma_2 Au=v(t), u(0)=x_0,\end{aligned} \] where \(\sigma_1+\sigma_2=\rho, \sigma_1 \sigma_2=1\). For some range of \(\rho\), the operators \(-\sigma_1 A\) and \(-\sigma_2 A\) generate analytic and exponentially stable semigroups on \(X\). This leads to well-posedness results in \(X\). Some applications to mixed problems for structurally damped beam equations complete the paper.
