The authors discuss the non-isentropic one-dimensional Euler equation \(\partial_tG(W)+\partial_xF(W) =0\) with periodic initial data \(W(0,x)=W_0(x)\), where \(W=(v,u,S)^T\), \(G(W)=(v,u,e+\frac{1}2 u^2)^T\) and \(F(W)=(-u,p,pu)^T\). Wave interactions are analyzed in a framework of specially chosen Riemann invariants, generalizing Glimm's functional and applying the method of approximate conservation laws and approximate characteristics. An \(O(\varepsilon^{-2})\) lower bound is established for the life span of the entropy solutions with initial data that posses a small \(\varepsilon\) variation in each period.
