    In this paper, the Keller-Segel system \[ \begin{aligned} n_t&=\nabla\cdot (D(n)\nabla n) - \nabla\cdot(\chi(n)\nabla c) + R(n), \\ \rho c_t&=\Delta c- c+ n,\end{aligned} \] is investigated in a bounded, smooth, possibly non-convex domain \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^N\) under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and with appropriate initial data. The conditions imposed on cell motility, sensitivity and source are \[ D\in C^2([0,\infty)), \quad D(n)\geq c_D(n+\delta)^{m-1}, \quad m\geq 1,\; c_D>0,\; 0\leq \delta\leq 1, \tag{1.5} \] \[ \chi(n)=n\widetilde{\chi}(n),\quad \widetilde{\chi}\in C^1([0,\infty)), \quad 0\leq \widetilde{\chi}\leq \chi_0(n+\delta)^{q-2}, \quad \chi_0>0, \; q\geq 2, \tag{1.6} \] \[ R\in C^2([0,\infty)), \quad R(0)\geq 0, \quad R(n)\leq a-b(n+\delta)^\tau, \quad a\geq 0, \; b>0,\; \tau>1,\tag{1.7} \] \[ R(n)\geq -b_0(n^\tau+1),\quad b_0>0.\tag{1.8} \] In the parabolic-elliptic (\(\rho=0\)) and parabolic-parabolic (\(\rho>0\)) case, the existence of a unique, global, nonnegative, bounded, classical solution is proved for the non-degenerate (\(\delta>0\)) case under the conditions (1.5), (1.6), (1.7), where \(q\geq m+2/N\) (or in the elliptic case, alternatively, \(\tau\geq q\) and \(b\) is sufficiently large). These theorems are then applied to suitable approximate problems and, under the additional hypothesis (1.8), the existence of a nonnegative weak solution is derived. Its boundedness is shown.
