Let \(M\) be a von Neumann algebra acting on a Hilbert space \(H\). Denote the unit of \(M\) by \(\mathbf{1}\). Let \(M_{sa}\) be the self-adjoint part of \(M\) and let \(\leq\) denote the standard operator order on \(M_{sa}\) given by the positive cone \(\{a^*a: a\in M\}\). Endowed with the standard operator order, the set \(P(M)\) of projections in \(M\) forms a complete orthomodular lattice with orthocomplementation \(p^\perp=\mathbf{1}-p\). Let \(E(M)\) denote the set of all positive contractions in \(M\). Two elements \(a\) and \(b\) in \(E(M)\) are said to be orthogonal (written \(a\perp b\)) if \(ab=0\). Given \(a\in M_{sa}\), denote by \(e^a_\lambda\) the spectral projection of \(a\) corresponding to the interval \((-\infty,\lambda]\), that is, \(e^a_\lambda=\chi_{(-\infty,\lambda]}(a).\) Define the spectral order on \(M_{sa}\) as follows: for \(a,b\in M\), we say that \(a\) is less than \(b\) in the spectral order (written \(a\preceq b\)) if, for each \(\lambda\in \mathbb{R}\) \(e^a_\lambda\geq e^b_\lambda.\) Note that for commuting elements the spectral order coincides with the standard order. Moreover, \(a\preceq b\) always implies \(a\leq b\), therefore both orders are equivalent on \(P(M).\) A spectral lattice means the structure \((E(M),\preceq,\perp),\) where \(\perp\) is the orthogonality relation defined above. In the present paper, the author shows that any spectral lattice orthoautomorphism of the structure of positive contractions on a von Neumann algebra, endowed with the spectral order and orthogonality relation, that preserves scalar operators is a composition of the function calculus with the natural transformation of spectral resolutions given by an orthoautomorphism of the projection lattice. In the case of von Neumann algebras without type \(I_2\) direct summand, any such a map is a composition of the function calculus with a Jordan \(*\)-automorphism.
