The results of the paper are related to the problems of approximation of discontinuous functions which occur in some practical problems as analyzing the internal body structure through computer tomography (the body density can be considered as a function with discontinuities of the first kind on a system of lines or surfaces) or investigating the Earth crust based on data from core samples obtained from bore holes (the soil density is inhomogeneous with discontinuities of the first kind in those points of the surface that separate two components). Thus the paper is focused on the estimation of a discontinuous function (bivariate) having unknown discontinuity lines (the domain of the definition being divided into rectangular elements), with discontinuous interpolating splines. The authors consider the case that the unknown discontinuities lie on lines parallel to the coordinate axes. Based on the new introduced concept of \(\epsilon\)-continuity of a function of two variables, the authors propose an estimation using a discontinuous approximation bilinear spline and the known one sided interpolation data on the given node mesh which are not on the discontinuity lines. Using the methods, the authors estimate the lines of \(\epsilon\)-discontinuity of the discontinuous function and select the optimal nodes of the approximate spline mesh. Some examples are given to illustrate the proposed method.
