Extremal Kähler metrics were introduced by \textit{E. Calabi} [Ann. Math. Stud. 102, 259--290 (1982; Zbl 0487.53057)]. Constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metrics on a compact complex manifold are automatically extremal Kähler metrics, but the converse is not always true: E. Calabi constructed examples of extremal, non-cscK metrics on Hirzebruch surfaces. On the other hand, cscK metrics on projectivized vector bundles were constructed by \textit{Y.-J. Hong} [J. Differ. Geom. 53, No. 3, 465--516 (1999; Zbl 1163.53341); J. Differ. Geom. 60, No. 3, 389--453 (2002; Zbl 1049.53050)]. In the present paper the author proves the existence of extremal, non-cscK metrics on projectivized vector bundles. More precisely, the main theorem is the following: Let \((M,\omega_M)\) be a compact cscK manifold with no nontrivial automorphisms. Consider a Hermitian vector bundle \(E\) over \(M\) admitting a decomposition into a direct sum \(E=E_1\oplus \ldots\oplus E_s\) of stable subbundles \(E_i\) of different slopes, each of them endowed with a Hermitian-Einstein connection \(\nabla_i\). Then the projectivized vector bundle \(\mathbb{P}(E)\) admits an extremal non-cscK mteric in the adiabatic Kähler class \([\omega_k]=2\pi c_1(\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}(E)}(1))+k\pi^*[\omega_M]\) for sufficiently large \(k\).
