In the present paper, the authors analyze the convergence of numerical methods that are based on a variational formulation in the waveguides. There are considered domains which are the union of a bounded domain and a finite number of infinite cylindrical waveguides. After a general formulation of the problem, the authors state the main convergence theorems for diffraction and resonance problems in an abstract framework. Next, there are applied the convergence theorems to the Perfectly Matched Layer and to the Hardy space method. In both cases, there are considered scalar Helmholtz diffraction problems and resonance problems. In the final part of this paper, the authors provide some numerical convergence studies for the Hardy space method and they argue that the method is applicable to resonance problems.
