The second author with R. E. Greene and Helga Schirmer [\textit{R. F. Brown} et al., Lect. Notes Math. 1411, 24--45 (1989; Zbl 0688.55002)] proved the following theorem: Let \(X\) be a smooth manifold with boundary and \(f:(X,\partial X)\to(X,\partial X)\) a smooth map. Write \(\phi:=f|\,\partial X\). Let \(p\in\partial X\) be an isolated fixed point of \(f\) and assume that \(\phi_{*,p}-I:T_p\partial X\to T_p\partial X\) is an isomorphism. Then either \(\text{ind}(X,f,p)=0\) or \(\text{ind}(X,f,p)=\text{ind}(\partial X,\phi,p)\). Here, the authors consider a slightly more general situation: \(X\) is a smooth manifold with or without boundary and \(A\) is a smooth codimension one smooth submanifold in the interior of \(X\) and \(f:(X,A)\to(X,A)\) a smooth map. Write again \(\phi:=f|\, A\) and let \(p\in A\) be an isolated fixed point of \(f\) such that \(\phi_{*,p}-I:T_pA\to T_pA\) is an isomorphism. Then \(|\text{ind}(X,f,p)|=1\).
