In this paper, a study has been made of the nature of thermal waves in a random nonsimple medium exhibiting thermal relaxation properties, using the model of \textit{P. J. Chen}, \textit{M. E. Gurtin} and \textit{W. O. Williams} for nonsimple medium [Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 20, 107-112 (1969; Zbl 0164.261)] and Lord-Shulman's theory for thermal relaxation in time [\textit{H. W. Lord} and \textit{Y. Schulman}, J. Mech. Phys. Solids 15, 299- 309 (1967; Zbl 0156.227)]. The method of perturbation for random medium developed by \textit{F. C. Karal}, \textit{C. Frank} and \textit{J. B. Keller} [J. Math. Phys. 5, 537-547 (1964; Zbl 0118.133)] has been utilised to determine the equation satisfied by the mean temperature. The results have been applied to the particular problem of penetration of temperature waves in a semi-infinite medium.
