The author outlines the basics of symmetric group theory and Noether's theorem in a form suitable for application in elasticity. He discusses the fundamental symmetry conditions for homogeneous variational problems of the form \(\int W(\partial u)\,dx\) and indicates some simplifications in the steps required to compute symmetries and conservation laws. Applications of these ideas will be presented in subsequent papers.
