The authors analyze a linear elastic, originally straight beam with variable stiffness under moderate deformations and the following two cases: Cantilever and simply supported beam, respectively. Using the Euler coordinates they apply the ''linear equivalence method'' [which had been developed by the second author, see e.g. An. Univ. Bucur., Mat. 31, 75-80 (1982; Zbl 0524.34014)] as an analytical approach. According to this method there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the nonlinear and the corresponding linear problem being valid also for their solutions. Some illustrative examples have been worked out numerically in order to demonstrate the effect of the geometrical nonlinearity.
