In this paper the author proves the following theorem which completes the classification of surfaces X and very ample line bundles L on X with \(L\otimes K_ X\) not very ample (together with the result of Van de Ven). Theorem: Let X be a non-singular complex projective surface and L a very ample line bundle on X with \(-h^ 0(L)\leq 6\) and \(c_ 1(L)^ 2\geq 10.\) Then \(L\otimes K_ X\) is very ample except in the following cases: (1) X is a ruled surface and the restriction of L to a fibre has degree 1 or 2.- (2) The surface contains a smooth rational curve C with \(C^ 2=- 1\) and \(L|_ C\simeq {\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb{P}}^ 1}(1).\)- \((3)\quad h^ 0(L)=5\) and \(10\leq c_ 1(L)^ 2\leq 11\) and \(h^ 1({\mathcal O}_ X)=1.\)
