For any finite group G a subgroup H satisfies \({\mathcal P}(G)\) if its intersection \(H\cap M\) with any maximal subgroup M of G is trivial, that is, either H or \(\{\) \(1\}\). The author proves several structure theorems about such subgroups; almost all of them are for the case of G solvable. For instance, it is shown that any H satisfying \({\mathcal P}(G)\), G solvable, is nilpotent and if not contained in the Frattini subgroup of G it is either elementary abelian or it has Sylow subgroups which are cyclic or generalized quaternion. The author also considers the more general situation where \({\mathcal P}(G)\) is replaced by \(H\cap M\triangleleft H\). Finally, there are examples given to illustrate the latter situation showing that the nilpotency does not necessarily follow in this case.
