The author calls a pro-p group G absolutely torsion-free if for every closed subgroup S of G the abelianized group \(S_{ab}\) is torsion-free. If K/k is a maximal p-extension of fields where p is a prime different from char(k) and \(\mu\) denotes the group of all p-power roots of unity, he shows that the Galois group of K over \(K\cap k(\mu)\) is absolutely torsion-free. He also proves that an absolutely torsion-free and soluble pro-p group is abelian, and from this he deduces that if the absolute Galois group of a field is nilpotent, then it is abelian. The author continues with the study of other properties of absolutely torsion-free pro-p groups, and he investigates when the cup product yields a surjection of \(H^ 1(G,Z/(p^ n))\otimes H^ 1(G,Z/(p^ n))\) onto \(H^ 2(G,Z/(p^ n))\) and when the inflation map of \(H^ 2(G_{ab},Z/(p))\) into \(H^ 2(G,Z/(p))\) is surjective for a pro-p G and positive integer n.
