The authors define on each of the categories inv-top, pro-top, and CPHTop a strong homology functor which is different from the usual Čech functor. Here, inv-top denotes the category of inverse systems of topological spaces indexed by co-finite directed sets and continuous maps as its morphisms, pro-top is constructed as usual by introducing an equivalence relation on the morphisms of inv-top, and CPHTop is the coherent pro-homotopy category introduced by the author [see Lect. Notes Math. 1060, 164-173 (1984; Zbl 0553.55008)]. As an application, the classical Steenrod-Sitnikov homology is extended to the category of arbitrary topological spaces; see \textit{D. A. Edwards} and \textit{H. M. Hastings} [Čech and Steenrod homotopy theories with applications to geometric topology, ibid. 542 (1976; Zbl 0334.55001)] for an earlier account of Steenrod-Sitnikov homology. The authors promise to study additional properties of the strong homology and establish that it is an invariant of the strong shape theory.
