Let \(\Omega\) denote the closed interval [0,1] and let bA denote the set of all bounded, approximately continuous functions on \(\Omega\). Let \(f\in bA\). It is shown that f has an (essentially) unique best \(L_ 1\)- approximation \(f_ 1\) by nondecreasing functions; \(f_ 1\) is shown to be continuous. For \(1<p<\infty\), the best \(L_ p\)-approximations \(f_ p\) are shown to be continuous, and they are shown to converge uniformly to \(f_ 1\) as \(p\to 1\). A characterization of \(f_ 1\) is given. It is also shown that if \(f^ n\in bA\), \(0\leq n<\infty\) and \(f^ n\) converges to \(f^ 0\) in \(L_ 1\) as \(n\to \infty\), then \(f^ n_ 1\to f^ 0_ 1\) in \(L_ 1\) as \(n\to \infty\).
