We consider a compact real 2-dimensional minimal surface M embedded, immersed, or branched-immersed in a complex 2-dimensional Kähler manifold. If M is not a complex curve, we show that its complex tangents are isolated and that a certain natural index attached to each must be negative. We derive a formula relating the Euler number of M, that of its normal bundle, the total branching order, and the sum of the indices of all complex tangents. We apply this formula in the case when M is minimally embedded in the manifold \({\mathbb{P}}_ 2{\mathbb{C}}\) relative to any Kähler metric. If M is a sphere, then it must be a complex line or conic. If it is a torus, it is either a non-singular complex cubic curve, or has degree zero.
