This paper presents some of the relations between rational iteration groups (of mappings) and their underlying parameter sets. An iteration group (of mappings) is called rational if it has a subgroup of the additive group of rationals \((Q,+)\) as a possible parameter group. For a rational iteration group I, let \(R_ I\) denote the collection of subgroups of Q which are parameter groups of I. If I is an iteration group of \(g\in I\), and \(h\in I\setminus \{id\}\), let \(N_ h=\{n|\) there exists an m such that \(h^ n-g^ m\}\) and if \(N_ h=\emptyset\), let \(n_ h=\min N_ h\). Theorem 1. Let I be a rational iteration group of g and \(h\in I\setminus \{id\}\). Then, for all \(G\in R_ I\), \([1/n_ h]\) is a subgroup of G, where [A] denotes the subgroup generated by A. Theorem 2. If \(g\neq id\) is nilpotent, if I is a divisible iteration group of g, and if k is the smallest positive integer such that \(g^ k=id\), then, for all real parameter groups G of I, \(\{k^{-n}| n\) positive integer\(\}\) is contained in G.
