The author considers the connection between the Kirillov theory for nilpotent Lie groups and the theory of *-products. A *-product on a smooth manifold W is an associative formal deformation of the algebra \(C^{\infty}(W)\) with the usual product. He starts by showing that for nilpotent Lie groups it is in general impossible to find an invariant *- product on a coadjoint orbit. He then goes on to consider representations. For a fixed coadjoint orbit W of a nilpotent Lie group G he selects global canonical coordinates of a particularly well-behaved kind and constructs a *-product on W which in these coordinates is the so-called Moyal *-product [\textit{F. Bayen}, \textit{M. Flato}, \textit{C. Fronsdal}, \textit{A. Lichnerowicz} and \textit{D. Sternheimer}, Ann. Phys. 111, 61-110 (1978; Zbl 0377.53024) and ibid. 111-151 (1978; Zbl 0377.53025)]. It is then shown how one can use this *-product to construct the irreducible representation associated with the orbit W by the Kirillov theory, and an explicit intertwining operator between the constructed representation and the standard type representation (acting on sections of a linebundle) is exhibited.
