The author considers the longitudinal motion of a straight cylindrical rod consisting of a (nonlinear) hyperelastic material and fixed at both boundaries. He proves the (local) existence of a unique solution of the governing differential equation under certain hypotheses by referring to the related nonlinear integro-differential equation. Further the global existence of solutions is proved by strengthening the original hypotheses. The paper is mainly of interest for mathematicians working in functional analysis.
