The authors generalise a result conjectured by \textit{L. O'Carroll} and \textit{M. A. Qureshi} [Q. J. Math., Oxf. II. Ser. 34, 211-221 (1983; Zbl 0516.13010)] and proved by \textit{Ngô Viêt Trung} [ibid. 35, 337-339 (1984; Zbl 0547.13008)]. Let \(B_ i\) be a subring of a commutative domain D such that D is a finitely generated \(B_ i\)-algebra for all \(i\in I\). Let \(B=\cap_{i}B_ i,\) let S be the multiplicatively closed set generated by \(\cap_{i}(B_ i\setminus 0)\), and set \(\min_{i}\{tr \deg D| B_ i\}=d.\) Then \(S^{-1}D\) is a Noetherian equidimensional Hilbert ring of dimension d when (i) B is infinite and \(Card(B)>Card(I)\); and (ii) D is a finitely generated B-algebra. - Variants include that, when I is finite, either (i) may be dropped or (ii) may be replaced by an integral closure condition on the \(B_ i's\).
