    The aim of this paper is to develop conditions under which the Drazin inverse \(M^D\) of a \(2 \times 2\) block matrix \(M=\left [ \begin{matrix} A&B \\ C&D\end{matrix} \right ]\) (with square matrices \(A\) and \(D\)) having group invertible generalized Schur complement \(S = D - CA^DB\) can be expressed in terms of the Banachiewicz-Schur form of \(M\) and its powers [see \textit{J. K. Baksalary} and \textit{G. P. H. Styan}, Linear Algebra Appl. 354, No.~1--3, 41--47 (2002; Zbl 1022.15006) and \textit{Y. Tian} and \textit{Y. Takane}, Linear Algebra Appl. 430, No.~5--6, 1641--1655 (2009; Zbl 1162.15002)]. The authors investigate partitioned matrices satisfying \(\text{rank}(M) = \text{rank}(A^D) + \text{rank}(S^D)\) and give conditions under which the group inverse of \(M\) exists and also present a formula for its computation.
