Let \((M,g)\) be a non-compact complete Riemannian manifold of dimension \(n\). The Laplace-Beltrami operator \(\Delta=\Delta(M,g)\) is essentially self-adjoint on \(C_0^\infty(M)\). Assume that the curvature \(K\) converges to \(-1\) at infinity. If \(K_{\text{rad}}+1=o(r^{-1})\), the author shows that there are no eigenvalues embedded in the essential spectrum. This estimate is sharp -- the author constructs a manifold with radial curvature decay \(K_{\text{rad}}+1=O(r^{-1})\) with an eigenvalue \(1+{(n-1)^2\over4}\) embedded in the essential spectrum \([{(n-1)^2\over4},\infty)\).
