Let \(K\) be an infinite field, and denote by \(A(n,r)\) the \(K\)-coalgebra of homogeneous polynomials of degree \(r\) in the variables \(x_{i,j}\), \(1\leq i,j\leq n\). In other words, \(A(n,r)\) is the \(r^{\text{th}}\) homogeneous part of the commutative polynomial ring \(K[x_{i,j}]\). Taking the linear dual gives the classical Schur algebra \(S(n,r)\), which has a basis \(\{\xi_{I,J}\}\) dual to the usual one \(\{x_{I,J}\}\) for \(A(n,r)\) given by monomials. \textit{J. A. Green} [in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 88, No. 1-3, 89-106 (1993; Zbl 0794.20053)] defined another basis of \(S(n,r)\) consisting of standard codeterminants. This basis was then used to give combinatorial proofs for results about Schur algebras, including the fact that they are quasi-hereditary. By replacing \(K[x_{i,j}]\) with the coordinate ring of quantum matrices \(A_q(n)\) one can form \(A_q(n,r)\), the \(r^{\text{th}}\) homogeneous part of \(A_q(n)\). Let \(S_q(n,r)\) be its dual, obtaining what it called a \(q\)-Schur algebra. In the work under review, the authors define quantized codeterminants, following the construction of Green. A quantized codeterminant is a certain product of two elements from the basis \(\{\xi_{I,J}\}\) dual to the usual basis \(\{x_{I,J}\}\) for \(A_q(n,r)\) which depends on two Young tableaux \(A,B\) of the same shape \(\lambda\). The collection of quantized codeterminants corresponding to \((\lambda,A,B)\) such that \(\lambda\) partitions \(r\) into at most \(n\) parts, and \(A\) and \(B\) are standard tableaux form a basis for \(S_q(n,r)\). Th \(q\)-Schur algebra \(S_q(n,r)\) can be viewed at a homomorphic image of Lusztig's modified quantized enveloping algebra \(\dot U_K\to S_q(n,r)\). Codeterminants, up to a \(q^{\text{th}}\) power, arise as the image of the elements \(F_S1_\lambda E_T\in\dot U_K\), where \(S,T\) are standard tableaux of shape \(\lambda\).
