The authors study hyperbolic curves and their jacobians over finite fields in the context of anabelian geometry. A fundamental result of \textit{J. Tate} [Invent. Math. 2, 134--144 (1966; Zbl 0147.20303)] shows that an abelian variety over a finite field \(k_0\) is determined up to isogney by the charcateristic polynomial of the action of the \(k_0\)-frobenius automorphism on its Tate module. In the first part of the paper this result is applied to anabelian geometry of curves over finite fields. The main result is a Torelli theorem in this setting. Let \(k\) be an algebraic closure of \(k_0\). In the second part of the paper the main theorem is applied to show that, for a curve \(C\) over \(k\) of genus \(g>3\), the pair consisting of (1) the abelianization of the absolute Galois group of \(k(C)\) and (2) the set of inertia subgroups corresponding to non-trivial valuations of \(k(C)\), determines the isogeny class of the jacobian of \(C\).
