The main topic of this paper is the existence of constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metrics in given cohomology classes of a compact Kähler manifold \(M\). The author studies a twisted equation introduced by \textit{J. Fine} [J. Differ. Geom. 68, No.~3, 397--432 (2004; Zbl 1085.53064)] which also appears in more recent papers by \textit{J. Song} and \textit{G. Tian} [Invent. Math. 170, No.~3, 609--653 (2007; Zbl 1134.53040)], generalizing the classical one. The main technical tool is the computation of a twisted K-energy. The existence of a solution in a given cohomology class \(\Omega\) is then shown to imply a stability condition, namely the positivity of a twisted Ross-Thomas polynomial for every effective divisor and for every positive variable smaller than the Seshadri constant of the divisor. In the non-twisted case, this result implies that if the class \(\Omega\) admits a cscK representative, then it is slope semistable with respect to effective divisors, a particular case of a conjecture by Ross-Thomas. On the other hand, if \(M\) admits a holomorphic submersion over a Kähler base \(B\) and is endowed with a relatively ample line bundle \(L\), then one can talk about adiabatic classes of \(M\), of the form: \(c_1(L)+r\pi^*\Omega_B\) (which are Kähler for sufficiently large \(r\)). If the submersion is fibrewise cscK and if the adiabatic classes admit cscK metrics for large \(r\), then it is shown that the stability condition holds for certain, precisely determined, twisting classes. The author presents several applications, among them he shows that if an algebraic surface contains an exceptional divisor with arithmetic genus greater than \(2\), then there exists a class \(\Omega\) such that \((M,\Omega)\) cannot be the base of an adiabatic cscK submersion. The results on adiabatic cscK metrics are also applied to derive new examples of general type threefolds with obstructed classes.
