The authors propose four finite difference schemes for the regularized long wave equation (or Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation) which conserve either discrete energy or discrete momentum. Under some conditions, the authors prove that the nonlinear scheme conserving momentum and mass has unique solutions which are stable in the maximum norm, and the errors in the solutions are of order \(O(\Delta x^2 + \Delta t^2)\). The numerical examples show that the numerical schemes are efficient and robust.
