    Suppose that \(K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})\) is a real quadratic field such that \(d\) is squarefree with \(17<d \equiv 1\pmod 4\). Suppose that \(\varepsilon = U/2 + V/2 \sqrt{d}\) is the fundamental unit \(>1\) of \(K\) which verifies \(U,V>0\), \(U\equiv 0\pmod 8\) and \(N(\varepsilon)= -1\). Using the arithmetic of quadratic fields, the authors prove the following nice result: If the class number \(h\) of \(K\) is 1, then \(\varepsilon>(2d)^{2/3}\).
