The authors propose a coupling of the finite element method and the boundary integral equation method for solving 2D acoustic transmission problems. The original transmission problem is firstly reduced to a nonlocal boundary value problem by introducing an artificial boundary and defining a transparent boundary condition from the relation between Dirichlet data and Neumann data on the artificial boundary. This is achieved in terms of boundary integral operators. Three different numerical algorithms are utilized for the solution of boundary integral equations to be involved in the computational formulations. Numerical tests are performed in order to support the theoretical findings.
