The authors study the complex Hessian equation on a compact Kähler manifold \(M\). A natural approach to solve it is the continuity method. While the openness follows from the implicit function theory, the closedness argument depends on a priori estimates up to second order. The zero order estimate follows from Yau's Moser iteration. In this work, the authors establish a second order estimate. They note that the classic methods for Monge-Ampère type equations do not work. Therefore they adopt an argument motivated by the work of \textit{K.-S. Chou} and \textit{X.-J. Wang} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 54, No. 9, 1029--1064 (2001, Zbl 1035.35037)] on the real Hessian equation.
