The main result of this article provides an upper bound for the number of cusps of a complete \(n\)-dimensional Riemannian manifold of finite volume with Ricci curvature bounded from below. This bound holds if in addition the manifold satisfies a condition that implies that \(0\) is the only eigenvalue for the \(L^2\)-spectrum of the Laplacian below \({n-1} \over {4}\) . Indeed, the number of cusps of such a manifold is bounded by an expression that involves a constant depending only on \(n\), the volume of the manifold and the volume of the unit ball centered at any point of the manifold. In the case of \(n=2\) there exist better upper bounds for the number of cusps as provided by the Cohn-Vossen inequality and results of Hartman, see [\textit{P. Li} and \textit{L.-F. Tam}, J. Differ. Geom. 33, No. 1, 139--168 (1991; Zbl 0749.53025)]. Hence the upper bound in the reviewed article is most interesting in the cases where \(n \geq 3\).
