The author proves new restriction theorems for semistable sheaves in arbitrary characteristic, generalising known theorems for characteristic zero. In fact, he also obtains an improvement of the characteristic zero results. As a sample, let \(H\) be a very ample line bundle on a smooth projective variety of dimension \(n\) defined over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. If \(E\) is a \(H\)-semistable torsion-free sheaf of rank \(r\geq2\) on \(X\) and \(a\) is an integer, \(a>\frac12\Delta(E)H^{n-2}+\frac{r^2(r-1)^2L_X^2}{8H^n}\), then, for a general divisor \(D\in|aH|\), the restriction \(E_D\) is \(H_D\)-semistable. Here \(\Delta(E)=2rc_2(E)-(r-1)c_1^2(E)\) and \(L_X\) is a certain non-negative number depending on the characteristic and the cotangent bundle of \(X\); in characteristic zero, \(L_X=0\). The main theorem has a weaker but more complicated condition on \(a\) and requires \(p\geq r-1\). The paper contains also a restriction theorem for strong semistability. The proofs combine those of the restriction theorems of Grauert-Mülich, Flenner and Bogomolov, the new features being non-separable descent and the use of the author's version of the Bogomolov inequality in positive characteristic.
