The Green-Griffiths conjecture predicts that the image of a holomorphic map from \(\mathbb C^n\) to a complex compact manifold of general type (that is, the canonical bundle is big) of dimension \(\geq n\) lies in a proper subvariety of the manifold. When \(n>1\), such maps should in principle be more tractable than entire curves (this case is studied most intensively throughout the literature, partially because of the relations with the so-called Kobayashi hyperbolicity). The authors extend to the intermediate setting (that is, when \(n>1\) and the dimension of the manifold is greater than \(n\)) the jet bundle techniques introduced by Semple, Green-Griffiths and Demailly. They construct jet bundles as a tower of Grassmannians over the manifold and jet differential bundles of invariant algebraic differential operators of prescribed order and degree acting on germs of the studied holomorphic mappings. In this setting the so-called effective locus appears contrary to the case when \(n=1\). Their main application is the non-existence of (non-constant) maximal rank holomorphic maps from \(\mathbb C^2\) into the very general degree \(d\) hypersurface in \(\mathbb P^4\), as soon as \(d \geqslant 93\). This improves the previously known lower bound for \(d\), \(d\geq 593\), obtained by the second author. This result is directly related to the following conjecture of Kobayashi: There do not exist entire curves in general projective hypersurfaces of sufficiently high degree.
