Let \(X\) be a smooth projective variety of dimension \(n\). The paper under review studies those \(X\) containing a linear space, say \(\Lambda\), of dimension \(s\), with numerically effective normal bundle. This condition can be thought of as \(X\) generically covered by linear spaces of dimension \(s\). It is clear that for \(s\) sufficiently big this is a strong constrain on the geometry of \(X\). The cases of \(s\geq n/2\) have been studied by \textit{M. C. Beltrametti, A. J. Sommese, J. A. Wiśniewski} [in: Complex algebraic varieties, Proc. Conf., Bayreuth/Ger. 1990, Lect. Notes Math. 1507, 16--38 Appendix: 33--37 (1992; Zbl 0777.14012)] and \textit{E. Sato} [Tohoku Math. J., II. Ser. 49, No. 3, 299--321 (1997; Zbl 0917.14026)]. The paper under review gives a complete description of the next possibility, namely \(n=2s+1\). This is done first studying the possible normal bundles of \(\Lambda\) in \(X\) and then via a subtle study of the families of lines that arise on \(X\). The resulting list is clear and effective.
