This is the second edition of the author's book which was first published in 1996 (Zbl 0852.15001). Based on the author's long research track in linear systems theory, he believes that the polynomial approach taken in this book provides an ideal framework for the special techniques used in the different areas of that theory. In the intervening fifteen years, however, some important changes have taken place in this area. Much greater emphasis is now put on interpolation theory, both polynomial and rational, and this is fully incorporated in the second edition. The connection between the Chinese Remainder Theorem and interpolation is explained, new material is added on tensor products, both of vector spaces and of modules, in particular tensor products of quotient polynomial modules. This has led to some new material on model reduction. Chapters 8 and 11 are renamed ``Tensor products and forms'' and ``Rational Hardy spaces'', and Chapter 12 entitled ``Model reduction'' is added. Apart from these major changes, the book is streamlined and improved where necessary.
