    [For part I see ibid. 28, No.4, 615-632 (1988; Zbl 0692.35034).] Let \(L=D_ t^{2m}+f(t)D_ x^{2m}+g(t)D_ y^{2m}\), where f(t) and g(t) satisfy (A1-i) \(f(0)=g(0)=0\), \(f(t)>0\) and \(g(t)>0\) for \(t\neq 0\); and (A1-ii) Both f(t) and g(t) are monotone increasing for \(0<t<\delta\), and monotone decreasing for \(-\delta <t<0.\) Consider the following conditions: (A2) There exists a constant \(\alpha\) with \(0<\alpha <1\) such that \(g(\alpha t)^{1/2m}| t \log f(t)| \geq \epsilon >0\) for \(0<t<\delta;\) (A3) Functions \(a(t)=\{f(t)\}^{1/2m}\) and \(b(t)=\{g(t)\}^{1/2m}\) satisfy \(| \partial^ ja(t)| \leq Ca(t)^{1-\sigma j}\) and \(| \partial^ jb(t)| \leq Cb(t)^{1-\sigma j}\) for \(-\delta <t<\delta\), \(1\leq j\leq m\), with some constant \(\sigma\) \((0<\sigma <1/m);\) (A4) \(g(t)^{1/2m}| t \log f(t)|\) and \(f(t)^{1/2m}| t \log g(t)|\) tend to 0 as t tends to 0. Then, the author proves the following: Theorem 1: Assume (A1) and (A2). Then, L is not hypoelliptic; Theorem 2: Assume (A1), (A3) and (A4). Then, L is hypoelliptic. Moreover, the author considers the hypoellipticity for the operator \[ P=D_ t^{2m}+f(t)D_ x^{2m}+ig(t)D_ y \] under (A1), (A3) and a similar condition to (A4).
