A proximinal subspace M of a Banach space X will be called absolutely proximinal if there is a real valued function f(r,s) defined for r,s\(\geq 0\) such that \(\| x\| =f(d(0,P_ M(x),d(x,M))\) for all \(x\in X\), where \(d(0,P_ M(x))\) is the distance from the origin to the best approximant set and d(x,M) is the distance from x to M. Then this functional dependence must be given by a suitable norm on \(R^ 2\). In the special case when f is the L-norm on \(R^ 2\) (i.e. \(L(a,b)=| a| +| b|)\) it was shown by \textit{G. Godini} [Lect. Notes Math. 991, 44-54 (1983; Zbl 0535.46007)] that M is absolutely proximinal if and only if it has the 1\(\frac12\)-ball property, which was first defined by \textit{D. Yost} [Bull. Austral. Math. Soc. 20, 297-312 (1979; Zbl 0407.41015)]. This paper is devoted to the study of this class of subspaces in Banach spaces. It is proved that: The set valued metric projection onto an absolutely proximinal subspace is Lipschitz continuous in the Hausdorff metric. Absolutely proximinal subspaces are the same as subspaces with the 1\(\frac12\)-ball property. A subspace is absolutely proximinal if and only if its polar is absolutely proximinal in the dual space.
