The main result of the paper is: If \(M=G/K\) is a symmetric space of compact type, then the principal orbits of \(\tilde K\) in \({\mathcal A}\) are isoparametric. Their codimension is equal to the rank of the symmetric space M. The multiplicities of the nonzero principal curvatures coincide with the multiplicities of the nonzero roots of M. The multiplicity of zero as a principal curvature is infinite. Furthermore, the action of \(\tilde K\) on \({\mathcal A}\) is polar, i.e., it is isometric, proper, Fredholm and there exists a finite-dimensional affine subspace \({\hat \alpha}\subset {\mathcal A}\) which meets all orbits and is orthogonal to the orbit through \(\hat Y\) for every \(\hat Y\in {\hat \alpha}\), where M is a submanifold of some Hilbert space, G is a compact Lie group, \(\tilde K\) is the space of \(H^ 1\) paths H: [0,\(\pi\) ]\(\to G\) with endpoints in K (subgroup of G), \({\mathcal A}\) is a Hilbert space.
