Completions (or extensions) of band matrices with invertible maximal and submaximal blocks are considered. The authors obtain the so-called linear fractional descriptions for invertible extensions. Say, for given matrices \(F_{ij}\), of size \(\nu_i\times \nu_j\), \(| j-i| \leq m\), all invertible block matrices \(A=(A_{ij})^m_{i,j=1}\) with \(A_{ij}=F_{ij}\), \(| j-i| \leq m\), are of the form \[ A=(HY_++X_-)^{-1}(I-HG)(Y_-G+X_+)^{-1}=(GX_- +Y_+)^{-1}(I-GH)(X_+H+Y_-)^{-1},\] where \(G=(G_{ij})^n_{i,j=1}\) and \(H=(H_{ij})^n_{ij=1}\) satisfy \(G_{ij}=0\) for \(j- i\leq m\), \(H_{ij}=0\) for \(j-i\geq -m\), and \(I-GH\) is nonsingular. Selfadjoint (i.e. \(F_{ij}=F^*_{ji}\), \(| j-i| \leq m)\) and Toeplitz (i.e., \(F_{i,j}=F_{i+1,j+1}\), \(| j-i| \leq m)\) cases are included. Similar results for extensions of the band \(\{F_{ij}|| j-1| \leq m\}\) which allow an \(LU\)- (or \(UL\)-) factorization or have lowest possible rank among all extensions are also obtained.
