Let F be an infinite field of characteristic different from 2. The author considers the minimum degree of involution identities in the matrix algebras \(M_ n(F)\) where \(n>2\). He shows that such an identity cannot be of degree less than n. In the case of the transpose involution he also shows that there is an identity of degree 2n, close to the standard identity, which holds in \(M_ n(F)\).
