The author uses the method of Lyapunov functions to obtain an invariance principle for a class of nonautonomous functional differential equations of the form \((1)\quad x'=f(t,x_ t),\) where \(f\in C(R\times C_ r,R^ n)\) and for \(r>0\), \(C_ r=C([-r,0],R^ n)\). The theory of limiting equations and Lyapunov functions are combined to investigate the behavior of solutions of equation (1). An asymptotic stability result is applied to an equation from population dynamics. Examples are also given to illustrate the hypotheses of some of the results.
