Two eigenvalue problems are studied: \((1)\quad -u''=\lambda u,\) \((2)\quad -u''+q(x)u=\lambda u,\) \(q(x)=0.5 \cos 2nx\) with the boundary conditions \(u(0)=u(\pi)=1\), \(u'(0)=u'(\pi)=0\) and with eigenfunctions which are assumed to have two symmetrically located discontinuities at \(0<d_ 1<\pi /2\), \(d_ 2=\pi -d_ 1\) satisfying some jump conditions. An algorithm is implemented to solve the inverse Sturm-Liouville problem, i.e. how to determine the unknown potential q(x) if the eigenvalues of (2) are given. The method is based on the fact that the differences between the eigenvalues of (1) and (2) are small except at the n-th ones.
