In the field of cardinal interpolation, Iso Schoenberg made a plausible conjecture to which, however, a counter-example is provided in this note. Essentially, Schoenberg assumed that a function from the so-called Bernstein class is approximated (interpolated) by an even order spline cardinal interpolant at all intergers, and he supposed then that a pointwise convergence (uniform) result can be obtained. In the latter the approximant would be recovered with a multiple of a \(\sin(\pi\cdot)\)-function as a remainder. Theorem~1 in this note provides a counterexample to this conjecture. Theorem~2 gives a more precise condition for convergence or divergence of the interpolants, and a final Theorem shows that for convergent infinite sums of the so-called sinc-functions, local uniform convergence of the spline cardinal interpolants can be achieved.
