Let \(K\) be a knot in the \(3\)-sphere. A rational number \(p/q\) is a characterizing slope for \(K\) if the oriented homeomorphism type of the manifold obtained by \(p/q\)-surgery on \(K\) determines \(K\) uniquely. \textit{K. L. Baker} and \textit{K. Motegi} [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 18, No. 3, 1461--1480 (2018; Zbl 1422.57010)] posed the question whether every hyperbolic knot has finitely many non-integer non-characterizing slopes. The main results of this paper give evidence that the answer to this question is yes. The author proves that for a hyperbolic knot \(K\), \(p/q\) is a characterizing slope for \(K\) whenever \(|p|+|q|\) is sufficiently large and \(q\geq 3\). Moreover in case \(K\) is a hyperbolic, \(L\)-space knot he answers the question completely by proving that \(p/q\) is a characterizing slope for \(K\) whenever \(|p|+|q|\) is sufficiently large and \(p/q\) is not a negative integer.
