In an earlier work [Compos. Math. 123, No. 3, 243--272 (2000; Zbl 0989.11024)], \textit{D. Ginzburg} and \textit{S. Rallis} introduced a period \(\mathcal{P}_{\mathrm{GR}}(\varphi)\) for \(\varphi\in\pi\), a cuspidal automorphic representation on \(\mathrm{GL}_6\), and made a conjecture between this period and the central value \(L(\frac{1}{2}, \pi, \wedge^3)\) of the exterior cube \(L\)-function. The paper under review proves one direction of this conjecture, namely the following theorem: Assume that \(\pi\) has trivial central character, and that \(L(s,\pi, \wedge^3)\) is nonzero at \(s=\frac{3}{2}\). If there exists \(\varphi\in \pi\) with nonzero Ginzburg-Rallis period \(\mathcal{P}_{\mathrm{GR}}(\varphi)\), then \[ L(\frac{1}{2},\pi,\wedge^3)\neq 0. \] To prove this, the authors use the fact that the exterior cube \(L\)-function for \(\mathrm{GL}_6\) is a Langlands-Shahidi \(L\)-function for the split, simply-connected group of type \(\mathrm{E}_6\). The idea is that the Ginzburg-Rallis period is related to a suitable \(\mathrm{G}_2\)-period of a residual representation on \(\mathrm{E}_6\). More precisely, the authors prove the following result, which implies the main theorem: Assume that \(\pi\) has trivial central character, and there exists \(\varphi\in \pi\) such that \(\mathcal{P}_{\mathrm{GR}}(\varphi)\neq 0\). Then there exists \(\phi\) in the induced space of \(\pi\) to \(\mathrm{E}_6\) such that the Eisenstein series \(E(\phi, s)\) has nonzero residue at \(s=\frac{1}{2}\). In the computation of the \(\mathrm{G}_2\)-period, which is indeed over a non-reductive quotient, one of the difficulties is the convergence issue of the period. The authors extend the analysis due to Beuzart-Plessis to overcome this difficulty, and their approach is expected to work for other periods.
